Researchers in Europe have developed a paint coating that may never need washing.
Dr. Catarina Esteves at the Eindhoven University of Technology in the Netherlands has developed a functional paint coating that is made up of nano-sized molecular groups that will resist water, dirt and is even scratch resistant.
Also the coating is self repairing. In the event that the coating is scratched the layers of molecules underneath re-orient themselves to take their place and restore functionality.
For the few car enthusiasts who actually enjoy washing their car, this story may not be of interest. However, for the vast majority that dread having to wash their car this is just what they were hoping for.
Dr. Esteves estimates that the product could make it to market within seven years and would not be overly costly.
